The Wave is a project, coordinated by SCX, Inc., to field test and bring to market the use of high-speed ferries along the Southern California Coast.
Two waves are converging. The first is the need for alternative transportation systems as the concerns about both traffic congestion and pollution from individual motor vehicles continues to grow. The second is the new developments in high-speed ferry technology. It is the mission of SCX, Inc. to be the catalyst at the intersection of these two dynamics in order to develop high-speed ferries that are eventually supported by private investment.
The Wave was launched March 3, 2003 by SCX, Inc. as a public/private partnership demonstration project to test the feasibility for congestion relief on the I-5 corridor with a new and untested concept of high-speed ferry service between Oceanside and San Diego. Although originally granted sufficient public funds to test this concept for 12 months, the state budget shortfall required an early cessation of the demonstration project after six months; the Wave ceased operations August 22, 2003. The results of the novel concept testing (see The Oceanside Demonstration) were very productive, providing valuable information for the future development of environmentally friendly alternate transportation for this extremely congested area.
SCX, Inc. is currently working on a business model for a 50 knot vessel to be tested on longer runs, including San Diego to Marina Del Rey.
The Wave provided a smooth, comfortable high-speed ride.
